Lifelong educators, Jack and Carolyn Sparks both retired from successful careers in education. Carolyn, earned her degree from Indiana University of Pennsylvania and first taught in Bedford, PA. In 1991, she retired from the Altoona Area School District with 27 years of service at Juniata Gap Elementary.
Jack earned his bachelor’s degree from Slippery Rock University and master’s degree in physical education from Penn State University. He completed postgraduate studies at Penn State and at Montana State University, where he was awarded a National Science Foundation grant. Jack was an active coach of both high school and collegiate athletes as well. He taught biology at the Altoona Area High School for nearly 20 years before retiring in 1987. Jack also served as director of the Logan Township Recreation Department from 1968 to 1990.
Jack and Carolyn tragically lost both of their sons, Scott and Todd. Every spring, both the Scott Douglas Sparks Memorial and Todd Gardner Sparks Performing Arts Memorial Scholarships are given to a worthy recipient.
