Erin Dodson Memorial Scholarship
It all began on a loud, energetic volleyball court at Altoona Area High School, where dreams danced in the footsteps of a spirited young girl named Erin Dodson, and a tearful story unfolded. Erin was diagnosed with brain cancer just two weeks after starting her freshman year at Juniata College. For the next 7 ½ years, Erin battled the disease with grace, a sense of humor, and a positive attitude. Her journey becomes a testament to the resilience, love, and indomitable spirit of youth. Even though she was battling difficult times, she always showed up for her teammates with a positive attitude and a high-five.
Erin volunteered at local hospitals and participated in the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life. She was a Buddy for Blair County Miracle League and an active ambassador for childhood cancer awareness through the Brian Morden Foundation. She spent her time living it to the fullest and making a mark. As a remembrance of Erin the Brian Morden Foundation created an Erin Dodson Memorial Scholarship.
Isabella Zavalanski was a 2019 Erin Dodson Memorial Scholarship recipient. I had the opportunity to speak with Izzy this summer about what path she was pursuing and more. Let me tell you more about this ambitious and hardworking woman. Izzy recently graduated from Indiana University of Pennsylvania, earning her degree in criminology and minoring in both women’s gender studies and child and adult advocacy. She has recently accepted a position at the Blair County Court House, where she will be a case manager for the victim’s witness office. I asked her if she had any aspirations or goals for the future and she responded, “ I’m not sure where I will end up but I’m excited to start my journey in helping others in need”.
From 2012 to 2023, the Erin Dodson Memorial Scholarship has helped 14 young students pursue higher education. Her legacy lives on as this scholarship will continue to invest in the youth and give them a chance to succeed and grow.
