The Greater Altoona Economic Development Corporation (GAEDC) works to promote economic and community growth in the Altoona area. Much of their work is invisible to the general public, but the broad impact of their efforts is felt by the region.
From 2011-2016, GAEDC was a recipient of an award from the CPCF competitive grants process. Funds received by GAEDC were used to support projects and events ranging from the summer concert series and Christmas parade to general maintenance. One of the goals of the original grant was to give residents the opportunity to socialize in a clean, safe downtown environment.
The “Summer Sounds” concert series became a signature event for the City of Altoona and downtown area. Featuring a variety of musical genres, thousands of local residents were drawn to the 11th Avenue corridor to socialize and enjoy free music.
GAEDC coordinates the production of the “Spirit of Christmas Parade,” including the decorating of the Heritage Plaza Christmas tree, the Plaza itself, and presenting the fireworks display. This annual tradition has become a festive kick-off to the holiday season.
In addition to these signature events, support from the CPCF enabled GAEDC to maintain flower baskets, refurbish signage, and update kiosks in Altoona’s downtown.
